Lorem Ipsum Generator

It is not nonsense. The text is a scrambled excerpt from a real Latin work — Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, "On the Ends of Good and Evil", written in 45 BC. The passage sits in Book 1, sections 32 and 33, where Cicero is arguing about the nature of pleasure and pain.

The familiar opening is not even the original wording. The canonical line begins "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit", and the first word is a fragment: "lorem" is the tail end of the Latin word dolorem, meaning grief or pain. The sentence it was cut from reads "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit" — roughly, "there is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain".

How it got from a Roman philosopher to a designer's placeholder is the commonly told part of the story: a printer in the 1500s is said to have taken a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. The detail is repeated everywhere and cannot be verified, but the text has been in continuous use as printer's filler for roughly five centuries, which is why it survives.

The reason it stuck is practical rather than literary. It has a plausible distribution of word lengths and letter shapes, and it looks like natural language at a glance, so a reader evaluating a layout judges the visual rhythm instead of getting distracted by the words.

Words are drawn at random from a pool of Latin words taken from the Cicero passage and its surroundings, then assembled into sentences and paragraphs with a fixed structure. The randomness is the point: every run produces different text, so you can generate a fresh block whenever you need one.

One consequence is worth stating plainly. Because the words are shuffled rather than reproduced, the output will not begin with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit". If you specifically need that canonical paragraph — for a client who expects to see it, or for a screenshot — this generator is not the tool for it.

The sentences are grammatically meaningless. They are Latin words in random order, not Latin prose. That is fine for judging layout and useless for anything that needs to be read.

It is not a test for internationalisation. Latin words are short and have no diacritics, so a layout that looks comfortable with lorem ipsum can break badly once real German compounds, Arabic right-to-left text or Chinese characters arrive. Test with real content in the real language.

It is not a test for truncation or overflow. Because the word-length distribution is not the same as English, a card that fits "consectetur adipiscing" may not fit "internationalisation". Use your longest realistic string instead.

It is not for shipping. It reads as unfinished work to anyone who sees it, and search engines index it as thin content. Replace it before a page goes live — the whole point of a placeholder is that it is temporary.

It is not accessible. A screen reader will attempt to pronounce Latin words in the user's language settings, which produces noise. Mark decorative placeholder blocks as aria-hidden, or keep them out of the shipped page entirely.
